How to identify cockroach?While it’s easy for many of us to recognize a cockroach, they nevertheless don’t look the same. There are actually more than 4,000 different types of cockroaches. In general however, roaches can be distinguished from other insects because of their colour, shape and size. One of its most distinctive features is its plate-like armour that covers its head and body. Cockroaches also have flat broad bodies with two protruding antennae used for sensing. As an insect, it has six legs equipped with minute sensory hairs. And they usually come in dark brown or black colour. They are about thumb size which can grow up to 3 inches in length. Regardless of type, a cockroach is a cockroach and they are pests meant to be rid of no matter what. Most common types of cockroachFor all intents and purposes, we will concentrate on the most common types of cockroaches we encounter in our kitchen, bathroom home German CockroachBlattella germanica or more commonly known as German Cockroach is the most common type of cockroach found practically across the world. It has a light brown colour and is typically distinguished for its two dark, parallel stripes on its back. This cockroach can live up to a year and is very common because of its fast breeding capacity. It is also at time called a water bug though this is not true. One female German cockroach can produce around 25 to 30 thousand off springs. The mother cockroach usually carries its eggs until they hatch which makes this species difficult to eliminate. American CockroachPeriplaneta Americana or American cockroach is the largest species of cockroach that can grow up to 3 inches long. In some countries, the American cockroach is often mistook for wood roaches. Both the male and female American cockroaches can fly, which makes them more terrifying. They can live up to two years and are more common in places where there are stocks of food such as bakeries, restaurants and grocery stories. Oriental CockroachBlatta orientalis or Oriental cockroach are dark brown or black in color. They are distinguished by their glossy or polished bodies and are easily recognized by their exposed abdominal segments. The oriental roaches are not capable of flying and often feed on decomposing or decaying organic matter. Thus, this type of cockroach is commonly seen in cesspits, drainage system, and damp locations such as under dampened sofas or humidified furniture as well as pipe and leaky faucets.
